TRC provided structural engineering design and contract administration services for the Duke Energy Center, now known as 550 South Tryon — a landmark mixed-use development that remains one of the most technologically and environmentally advanced high-rise projects in the United States.
The six-phase development includes a LEED-certified office tower rising approximately 50 stories above eight levels of structured parking, a nine-story annex building with an elevated plaza, and a 37-story residential tower constructed above six levels of Mint Museum space and nine levels of parking. The project established a new benchmark for integrated urban mixed-use design in downtown Charlotte.
Architecturally, the tower is distinguished by its iconic “handlebar” crown — a 160-foot metallic bridge element that frames skyline views while screening rooftop mechanical systems. Structurally, the project broke new ground as the tallest building in the world to utilize precast concrete double tees in a high-rise application, enabling accelerated construction and highly efficient, column-free interior floor plates.
The development also achieved LEED Core & Shell Platinum certification, supported by advanced daylight harvesting systems, high-performance building controls, and a water reclamation system that captures and treats rainwater and groundwater for reuse in cooling operations.
An integrated programmable LED lighting system further enhances the tower’s civic presence, allowing the façade to respond dynamically to community events, athletic milestones, and regional celebrations.
