Construction of the new 106,084-square-foot Cushing-Hatherly Elementary School began with a groundbreaking in October 2025, marking a major investment in Scituate’s educational infrastructure. The new facility is being constructed on the former Hatherly grass fields, allowing students to remain in the existing school throughout the build.

TRC is providing structural steel detailing services for approximately 775 tons of structural steel, supporting a design centered around a prominent “central core” of shared community spaces with two dependent classroom wings organized around two internal courtyards. The steel structure enables the open, flexible interior volumes and durable building envelope required for long-term school performance.

The high-performance design incorporates stainless-steel and steel window systems and a coastal-inspired material palette reflective of the surrounding seashore environment. As of early 2026, excavation and foundation work have been completed, and vertical wall construction is underway, with building completion targeted for March 2027.

The project team also achieved approximately $10.4 million in cost savings — roughly 8% of the total budget — through strategic optimization of mechanical systems and favorable material market conditions, enhancing overall project value while maintaining design intent.
