Springfield Memorial Hospital’s “Advancing Care by Design” program delivered a major campus modernization anchored by a $152 million expansion completed in 2016. The multi-phase effort refreshed the hospital’s architectural identity while significantly upgrading clinical capacity and infrastructure.

Key elements included a 115,000-square-foot, three-story Patient Care Tower constructed above the existing two-story E Building, adding 114 private patient rooms. A separate 62,000-square-foot surgical addition introduced six advanced operating rooms equipped for robotic procedures. The project also delivered the 72,000-square-foot Memorial Center for Learning and Innovation (MCLI), featuring a 350-seat auditorium, simulation labs, and an 86-foot pedestrian bridge linking the facility to an adjacent parking structure.

TRC provided integrated civil, structural, and MEP engineering services, supporting the complex vertical expansion and campus-wide infrastructure improvements. The project incorporated major mechanical upgrades that enabled the hospital to add roughly 200,000 square feet of space without increasing overall energy consumption, along with new plumbing systems, extended utilities, and daylight-focused electrical design to enhance patient comfort and operational efficiency.
